Democrat

I was sooooo pissed a few years ago that I switched my affiliation from Dem to Independent - yesterday I mailed in my papework to switch to....GASP! dare I say it - Republican!!!....yes...not all repubs are right wing extremists - just like all dems are not left wing bleeding liberals....there are many many many more like me who are somewhere between crazy and strict libertarians. See - I don't really give a rat's ass who someone marries and shrug....if it's for you, Pro-Choice is ok with me. Because I believe that government should not really delve into personal and private issues that in the BIG scheme of things - won't mean anything anyway when our country is going in the toilet. In other words, I don't believe that we should elect a leader based solely on such dividing and emotional issues such as these. We need to come together in the middle and focus on China, oil, economy, jobs and security - as in let's make a plan and do it - let's hunker down and find that one single little tiny teeny shred of commonality that we all possess - all million colors of us - we ALL possess it - and that is personal freedom. Isn't that what sets us apart - to be able to be pro-choice or not, to worship God or the Goddess, to live and breathe alongside each other no matter what the differences we may have? Isn't that what freedom is all about? Isn't that what our forefathers imagined - at the cost of many many indigenous peoples - who sacrificed their land and their lives to us so that we could live freely??? If not, what is the whole point - to cower under people in faraway lands who hate me just because I am American? When did being American become a bad and evil thing? I am proudly American, proudly Spiritual, proudly tax-paying and charitable to those who need it, seeking to become a part of the solution...and not to add to the problem. If I can encourage one person to think like this...and they can encourage 1 more person...and on and on and on...I live and let live. I respect all and any. I judge no one. I protect self and family and harm no one. No one - not even those who hate.

Roseloe Motel - Country Comfort on a Budget

There aren't any bad things I can really say about this low-key locally-managed 50's style motel. There is actually a resident manager on premises and this lovely lady's name is Thelma Curtis. She will instantly remind you of a favorite aunt, or concerned grandma - she embodies all that is good about home-style comfort.

The home-like comfort description is very fitting - the room I stayed in was number 26 also known as the “Sam Snead” room. Indeed, his pictures adorned the walls painted a serene and calming washed-out blue. The room was exactly as I expected - a little faded and a little worn around the edges, but in that home-y comfortable sort of way that will instantly steal your heart.

There are no fancy bells and whistles, but what you will find is an extraordinary understanding of a weary traveler and her needs. There were a few amenities included in the very budget-friendly price that were immediately appreciated. FREE basic cable with HBO on a 27” TV, plus all the things you would want away from home - coffee maker, fridge, microwave, phone (Free local calls). There were thoughtful conveniences like real paper towels on a holder along with a cooking guide for the microwave. The motel binder included not only the menus of all the area's eateries and a channel listing, but the names and phone numbers of the area's B & B's including the insanely expensive Homestead. I appreciate any place that includes listings of their competitors!

I found that interesting and extremely endearing, considering that this little modest motel can be easily missed because of the popularity and historic status of the hulking Homestead and the enchanting web sites of the area B & B's offering idyllic stays in their gorgeous Victorians.

The bathroom was impeccably clean, as was the sink vanity area that was separate from the tub and toilet which is very convenient when there is more than one guest. Who wants to put on their makeup over a toilet in a steamy bathroom?

This is a great place to stay if you wish to enjoy the magnificent natural springs at Jefferson Pools and/or hike and relax in the many varied natural areas nearby. You can spend an entire day at Lake Moomaw or the Goshen Pass gorge area or enjoy a leisurely and scenic drive up Route 220 towards Monterey in Highland County - a gorgeous mountainous area and quaint little town known as Virginia's “Little Switzerland”.

The area B & B's do offer fabulous stays but if you appreciate the privacy of your own room and convenient parking right outside your doorstep and cannot, or like me, will not pay the exorbitant prices at The Homestead, this charming little motel will fit the bill.

This motel is truly a throwback - there are no internet reservations or confirmation numbers - just call and advise Mrs. Curtis when you want to visit. Almost like visiting Grandma's house!

540-839-5373
Rt 1 Box 590
Hot Springs, VA 24445

http://www.roseloe.netfirms.com/

Cafe Mocha

I was anxious to stop in during a lunch hour to check out Cafe Mocha which moved from Howard street to it's new location near Penn Station on St. Paul. I had heard great things about this cozy place in The City Paper so I wanted to see if I could have the same experience.

First of all, the aroma wafting out through the open door was ambrosial - enticing me in even before I hit the first step. I assumed that the wonderful smells were the two specials that were written with colored chalk on a blackboard hung behind the counter - Jerk Chicken and Chicken Curry.

I would have loved to sample some “real” food, however, I was in a hurry and wanted something fast and what would be considered “staples” in cafe world. Just like a deli, when I am most inclined to order a BLT - a fine measure of the kitchen's expertise - a easy and simple item that if they cannot do it well, speaks of what also may be lacking.

So - a frozen Mocha drink and a plain bagel with cream cheese.

Fortunately, I was the first in a line of three and I was glad because the drink took forever to prepare. There were only two people working and while one stayed in the kitchen, the other gentleman was handling everything else, including serving the food. I did see a few trays of some tasty looking sandwiches coming out of the kitchen.

However, there appeared to be some sort of problem with the blender. After watching him open two envelopes of some kind of dry mix, my heart sinking further and further, I finally realized that the blender was not really crushing the ice. After a few botched attempts I was presented with a cup of “stuff” - the un-crushed ice poking out. There was no whipped cream or chocolate drizzle and I was instructed that the straws were “over there”. I was still in dismay looking at the sad little drink when my plain bagel came out of the kitchen in a brown paper bag. Maybe that would be good - a glimmer of hope!

The tab came to $6.24 and I collected the bag and drink and headed over to “over there”. It was a counter upon which sat a cup with unwrapped straws stuck in it. There were no napkins, but a roll of paper towels, the bottom half which was wet. I was hesitant, but chose a straw after carefully wiping it off with a clean tissue from my purse.

I had just enough time to peer around and up the staircase which led to a room which appeared very lively. The view through the huge window had to be incredible, but time was a factor and I had no time left after the long wait.

I attempted to sip from the drink through the tiny straw and the bitterness hit me like a ton of bricks. I could see the sediment from the dry mix falling quickly to the bottom of the cup. I tried to stir it up and went for another sip - gross! I opened the car door and spit it out, grabbing tissues from under my car seat. It was worse the second time. Grrrr! A frozen coffee drink is fast becoming a trendy staple of most cafes and coffee houses - originally made famous at Starbuck's and Panera, now even McDonald's makes a pretty decent mocha frappe.

My next thought was maybe the bagel will be good. Ha! Fat chance - the bagel was plain and unremarkable. Tasteless, dry and looked exactly like the ones wrapped in plastic on the counter of 7-11 and Royal Farm stores. It was not toasted - just sliced and some strong tasting cream cheese smeared on it. It was not gross, just very dry and lacking any kind of taste. I ate a half, but could not bear the thought of eating the rest - it was just too unappealing and I did not want to waste the calories. If it is not worth the caloric intake, I don't eat it.

I drove back to my office with the foul taste still in my mouth and could not resist pulling into the nearest MickeyD's and ordered up a large Mocha Frappe. As I pulled away from the drive-through I tossed the offensive Cafe Mocha drink in the trash.

Would I dodge traffic and navigate the perplexing parking lot again - not likely. I was dismayed that this place with such a cool name and apparently a lunchtime staple of the City Paper folks turned into an unfortunate experience for me. The ridiculous price for a dry bagel and drink made from a mix was bad enough. The unwrapped straws and paper towels sitting around on a dirty counter and the sheet covering the kitchen doorway was the last...well....straw!

Haute Dog & Crepe Night 10/21/10

Haute Dog & Crepe Night 10/21/10

Combining all that is right with the world - a exquisitely delicious artisan hot dog and a divine savory crepe....sigh...and the almond croissants......they are otherworldly! According to President Obama, we are a nation of electronic junkies who cling to our iPods, iPhones and Internet social websites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Flickr. I suppose it's a little like clinging to our Bible and guns, as Mr. Obama described Pennsylvanians during his presidential campaign. I am distracted because I don't know if I should grab my gun during a break in or point my iPhone at an intruder with the "shotgun" application.

Mr. Obama recently told a May 9th Hampton University graduation assemblage that "information" was a "diversion" if we allowed too much of its content to apply "excessive pressure" to our thoughts and ideas. Somehow sorting out the truth could necessarily be a 24/7 endeavor because the amount of "misinformation" found in the Internet would distract us from reality.

I am distracted because New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced that the Times Square bomber was most likely a disgruntled white person similar to a tea party supporter. I suppose the fact that we found dozens of e-mails sent by the bomber to known Al Qaeda operatives in Pakistan is an example of too much "information" we shouldn't be informed about.

So I think to be safe in the information black hole that Mr. Obama hopes to place us in as a nation, the first thing he has to do is to put us to sleep and then be sure we are fed the distraction of ignorance and manipulation by the national media. To say the national media is a cult groupie for Mr. Obama is a distraction for most liberals but a source of pride to the socialists who surround him.

I am distracted by the dizzying array of Mr. Obama's transformation of America, the unsustainable spending, the bailouts, the government controls of our health and our banks and the liberal elitist appointments to our highest court. But to oppose or criticize Mr. Obama's avalanche of political distractions is to use something he cannot misinform or reshape by using something that has always pierced the fog of political intrigue. That something is free speech, joined with the courage to expose the truth.

When a president tells the citizens to avoid gathering too much information, it is the subtle suggestion that we are incapable of separating the good from the bad, truth from fiction, or our a warning about individual curiosity that can lead to our own greatness. Information is knowledge, it is power and it rides the scales of truth.

So Mr. President, I, for one, shall not be distracted or diverted by you any longer. I shall observe, consult, absorb and seek out all the sources of information for the individual liberties you wish to suppress and control. What world would we live in if Edison, Einstein, Copernicus and other great minds decided that too much information "distracted" their thinking? Following
the financial crisis caused by the government itself, the government passed
stimulus and bailout plans creating a huge debt and a takeover of much of the
financial and auto industries.

The health care reform bill, passed against the objection of the majority of
American people, will lead to an expensive government-run single payer plan
giving the government control over our personal lifestyles and the rationing of
health benefits.

Obama and Congress are pushing a financial reform bill regulating Wall Street
and giving the executive branch total power, without any oversight, to disband
companies, determine their salaries and fire any CEO in its discretion.

With unsecured borders and illegal alien amnesty, the liberals will have a huge
voting bloc guaranteeing their control of government for decades to come.

On the near horizon is a cap and trade bill. If passed, it will regulate the
utility companies and allow the government to regulate, among other things, the
temperatures in our homes and to tell us what kind of appliances and light bulbs
that we can use.

To mitigate any dissent from sources such as talk radio, the Internet, and the
tea parties, the government, in my opinion, is on target to mute such criticism
by implementing speech censorship.

Our limited government republic, as set forth in our Constitution, can only be
saved if we vote these socialists out of power.

John A. OR, as we called it "Chuck & Di's"....lol! : )

Back in the day, about 10 years or so, this was THE place for a quick breakfast on the way to work or a quick lunch during a quick lunch hour for me and many of the industrial area's workers.

I had an occasion last week to be in the area before they closed and decided to revisit it for one of my most favorites lunches - chicken salad and ice tea.

Their chicken salad is practically famous, and it is always fresh and always great tasting. The same for their ice tea - they make a sweet and unsweetened version in a big gallon jug that is kept in one of the coolers. Customers serve themselves - get a cup, scoop some ice and pour from one of the jugs. (They also have lemonade)If you want a slice of fresh lemon, hand the cup top to the owner and he will bring you back a slice from the kitchen.

The sub was exactly as it always was - on a H & S roll, packed full with fresh lettuce and tomato....so good. And so very cheap - about $4.00. The large tea is cheap as well....the total tab was about $5 and some change.

I have gotten used to good breads and rolls at pricier "gourmet" places, so the H & S roll was a throwback to my early days when I did not know any better, but the chicken salad would have tasted just as good on a rice cake....the bread is always just secondary to the chicken salad here.

The homemade tea, as usual, was stellar.

So, for quick, tasty and cheap eats on the run and you happen to be near this beloved dive, stop in and enjoy the food...just try not to think too much about the surroundings...lol!

Charlie & Dee's Restaurant
410-837-8451
1539 Bush St., Baltimore, MD 21230

I wanted to love it.......

but I was surprisingly disappointed! On a particularly rainy, cold-ish day I was craving some warm comfort and thought I could get it from Atwater's in Belvedere Square. I have never been able to go there during lunch because it is always packed with other hungry office workers. So after work I cruised on up through the city and was able to find a parking spot.....surprise!.....and I was happy when I went though the doors and it was barely crowded, instead of the usual sardine-packed jam at the door.

Since I have never been inside, I decided to look around to see what my options were.....I found Sushi (big pass on that...yuk!)which appeared to be fresh and popular with the few patrons that were there. There is also a counter for Neopol Savory Smokery which features smoked delacacies---->

http://www.belvederesquare.com/index.cfm?page=market&id=23&pg=1

I eventually wandered back where there was a fresh fruit and veggie stand and I saw several people grabbing quarts of what looked like red orange juice. I discovered it was fresh-squeezed blood orange juice. I grabbed up one for myself and also decided to try some of the premium tomatoes on the counter - from Canada called "Kumato"...kinda strange looking brownish thing.....very shiny and pretty though. $8 for the juice and $5 for 5 smallish "Kumatos".

Since my time was limited, I glanced around and saw beautiful meats and any kind of candy you may want offered, but Atwater's was my destination and I really needed some comfortable hotness in my belly.

So back to where I started and I ordered their chicken noodle soup that the girl assured me was "very good". I also picked up a berry crostada which looked amazing under the glass. $6.95 for a "bowl" of soup and $3.95 for the dessert. A little pricey, but I was confident based on all the favorable reviews that it was worth it.

So I schlepped my goods all the way home and was anxious for some culinary comfort.
The soup was in a tiny container, and when I poured it into my soup bowl, it barely filled it at all.....still, I was looking forward to my first taste. Well, it was lukewarm and very bland...so I microwaved it for a few seconds and tasted it. It tasted as bland as it looked - dishwater-looking broth, a few long, stringy, hard-to use-the-spoon-with noodles and two pieces of chicken. It was sad....the most positive thing was it was loaded with what looked like fresh sliced mushrooms - I was grateful for that. I added a pinch of salt and some McCormick's "Hot Shot" (black and red pepper) and that lent at least some flavor to the soup.

There was little resemblance to the steaming chicken-y broth goodness that provided such comfort to me over the years - this broth appeared to be nothing but water - there was no hint of any chicken stock at all. The few pieces of chicken were large and tasty, but was really more of a "tease" than actual sustenance. It was supposed to have rosemary, thyme and sage, but I detected none of these flavors.

There was a tiny butt-end piece of bread included.....and it was quite hard. I soaked it in the broth as best as I could, so it was edible...and actually not too bad.

Maybe I got the bottom of the barrel with the soup because it was pretty sad and I can't believe this is the norm here for 7 bucks.

I was still hungry after the tiny bowl of soup and rock-hard bread, so I was anxious to dig into the crostada. Usually, I cannot eat dessert right after a meal, but I was really craving more food.

The crostada was good...a little stale...but good. Worth $4.00?....not really. But at least it satisfied some of my remaining hunger pangs. I thought of the less-pricey pastries at Xia Xia's, Panera or Fenwick Bakery and this did not compare.

So....for almost $12 I was left wanting. Wanting more food for sure. But also, wanting more of a "wow" factor....like, "OMG, how could I have not been here yet?" kinda moment...but instead, it is more like - OK, I did it and probably won't do it again. Cross Atwater's off my bucket list, for sure.

I have heard that some people are OK with the pricing because they use local products...however, I go to farmer's markets every week and I get huge baskets of tomatoes, potatoes, etc for very cheap. I would think that basic ingredients that go into a soup like chicken noodle would render at least a larger portion, let alone a better-tasting and veggie-laden soup. The prices are borderline offensive. While I was waiting for my soup, I heard another patron order a "whole" so I thought it was a sub-type deal. NOT! They actually sell sandwiches - about $5 bucks for a half and around $9 or $10 for a whole.

Are they kidding? If the bread was huge, I could understand it, but they were so tiny. The chicken salad which is raved about was very thinly spread between the bread. That sandwich was definitely not packing a punch.

So, be warned - you will not get much of a bang for your buck here, but I think the people who patronize this place are OK with it. For every person like me who can find other cheaper and tastier options, this place will be enjoyed by the individuals who like the ambiance and attraction of an "up-scale" market-type experience as well as tourists who don't know any better.

I happen to know too many other places that are more budget-friendly for me and I would be reluctant to travel out of my way again.

I am regretting that I did not skip Atwater's and buy the roasted chicken that was on sale for only $4.99 and a big container of some luscious looking tomato and dill salad that was being offered from one of the meat counters. For less than $10, I would have had a couple good meals.

Sigh.

The best thing I did get? Definitely the fresh orange juice and the high-priced Kumatos.....did not mind spending the money cause both of these were phenomenal.

So, while I would not go back to Atwater's I would go back for the juice! <grin>

http://www.atwaters.biz/todaysmenu_belvedere.php

Just in time for St. Patty's Day!

Yay! I have only just discovered this little gem about 9 or 10 months ago. Since then, I have made the trek from my office on the-always-fun-to-navigate Belair Rd to it's rather unassuming location (looks like a former 7-11) in Perry Hall.

The fact that whatever I buy has to be transported to my home that can take either 30 minutes or an hour depending on traffic..lol..has a lot to do with what I order.

So I started safe and ordered a cold sub for my first go-round - the "Baggio" and a medium size container of potato salad.

I was pleasantly surprised when I arrived home about 40 minutes later and unwrapped the sub - not only was it perfectly wrapped - but looked as if it had been prepared only minutes before. I actually could not believe how good and fresh it really was!

The potato salad was very creative - huge chucks of garlicky pickles intermingled with the cooked-just-right potatoes. Very seldom can I order deli potato salad with any hopes of not receiving half-raw potatoes. It was most appreciated.

So, to be sure that I did not have "beginner's luck", I have gone back again....and again.....and again....lol!

I have tried several other subs - The "Porketta" is one of my faves - lean pork roast cooked tender-perfect, with onions and provolone and their signature dressing...my goddess, it sent me into blissful nirvana!

I have also tried the meatball sub and their Italian - both very, very good.

If you are looking for a entree - try the homemade ravioli. Delicious. Tender pillows of cheese with an awesome sauce bursting with flavors....a real treat for anyone craving authentic Italian cooking.

You can also purchase their breads - OR, like me, you can buy a frozen loaf to take home and bake fresh from the oven.

There is a nice small dining area - and they recently installed a self-service soda fountain machine for those who like to drink from cups with ice.

This place is very out-of-my-way, yet I make the time to go-out-of-my-way whenever I can!

Location: 9611 Belair Road • Perry Hall, Maryland 21236 Phone: 410-248-3288

Mystickal Voyage now offers online store

Please check out Mystickal Voyage's website. But I sucked up my suburban fear and after driving around for a little while trying to find a place to park, I finally found a spot near University Parkway and enjoyed a small hike up to the cafe which is located inside Ambassador Apartments.

After wrestling with a broken door knob, I stepped inside and was struck by a peculiar smell that was at first, not identifiable. It was not at all what I expected - dark, but cosy and warm, with coffee and chocolate aromas permeating throughout.

It was dim, but hardly warm and cosy - instead it was cold and well....kinda dingy looking. There was a weird color on the walls that do not do well inside on such a gray afternoon and the paintings (for sale) that were hanging, while bright and colorful did not stand out and did little to bring any cheerfulness to the interior. Perhaps on a sunny day - with some light streaming through the windows would liven it up a little.

I was a little hesitant, but the few people there seemed happy and content, but very focused on their newspaper and/or books. Since Hopkins is right around the corner, I was not surprised, but I was still a little weirded out by the eerie silence and trying to adjust to my surroundings. I was still trying to figure out the smell, I know it was some kind of Asian thing going on, and when I picked up the menu, I realized why.

My “in-my-mind-cosy-shabby-chic-throwback-coffee-and-chocolate-shoppe” was a noodle house??? Who knew....lol. I was actually relieved when I was finally able to distinguish the smells and noticed several people eating with gusto from bowls and I saw a little girl with her Mom using chop sticks and seeming to really enjoy being there!

I was greeted very warmly by the girl behind the counter and I was instantly put at ease - she was very helpful in answering my questions about the many offerings of teas and coffees - they have a great variety and I would have enjoyed spending time sampling, but I had such a hard time parking, I barely had time to order anything more than one of their “Coco-Lattes” - from their winter offerings board - “Almond Joy” and I chose one of their luscious-looking muffins - pineapple and coconut. The server told me they did not make them on premises, they were brought in, but did not offer any bakery name.

While waiting, I browsed around - they have a case to the left of the counter that was filled with chocolates of all types - but after determining they, like the muffins, were also “brought in”, I declined to try any. I'm a finicky chocoholic and was not feeling adventuresome.

Instead, I sat at one of the little tables and observed the other patrons.

The gentleman directly across from me was eating heartily from a steaming bowl of Udon noodles and was eventually brought a wrap - a beautifully presented and very fresh looking wrap. He noticed me looking and told me it was the “Chicken Salad Wrap” and was ”fantastic”. Another diner overheard our conversation and smiled and said her fave was the ”Spicy Chicken Teriyaki Wrap” and the ”Maguro Wrap” - seared sushi grade tuna, avocado, pickle ginger, cucumber, romaine and white chocolate Wasabi sauce. Although I am not a fan of fish, it sounded intriguing.
Besides the wraps and a few sandwich choices (all come with a side salad), they have a wide array of noodle and rice bowls and also a nice selection of dumplings. I would have like to have tried those, so made a mental note to check them out next time.

They also have a small “Veggie” selection - one of those is their version of the “Powerhouse” wrap , which has always been a fave of mine when I am feeling....well....veggie-ish. They use Feta cheese, instead of Havarti and a soy mustard vinaigrette as a dressing. They also have an “Energizer” wrap - which included avocado and Fontina cheese on a sesame semolina bread.

I like the creativity and thoughtfulness of their menu - this seemed like a great place to stop in and grab a bite and/or just relax with a coffee.

The muffin, while obviously not freshly baked, was moist and flavorful. It was a perfect accompaniment to my Almond Joy Coco-latte.

Ahhh......the Coco-latte....I saved the best for last. It took a few minutes of me waiting for the drink to be prepared, but what a treat!

I am not too sure what I was expecting, but it was beyond compare - wow! They use 100% real chocolate and infuse it with milk. They then add fresh fruit and/or spices to give it a perfect flavor. The best hot chocolate drink I have had in a long, long time and the creamy whipped cream on top just made it all the more luscious. There was just a hint of almond and coconut - not at all overwhelming the chocolate. There was not any nasty sediment left in the bottom of the cup and it was all I could do to not try to lick the inside of cup...lol!

It was just under $6.00 for the coco-latte and muffin.

They also have breakfast selections and the hours seem convenient enough. Would I come back? While I would not make a special trip after work or on the weekends as parking would seem insurmountable, I would brave the noontime traffic to pick up one of the wraps or try the dumplings, absolutely! If I lived nearby, I would definitely stop in often.

If only for another one of those cups of blissfully rich chocolate!

http://www.chocolateacafe.com/

Nobody does fudge......

like The Briggitine Monks in Amity, Oregon!

First of all, the price is unbeatable - only $10.95 for a 1 pound box of the creamiest fudge you will ever taste. I have endured tummy-aches and alka-seltzer moments from these gastronomical aberrations. Don't get me wrong - I love a good cheese steak sub (especially when I get one), but they can be a very rare thing to find.

For me, a good cheese steak sub conjures images of hearth and home - warm, comforting drippiness. As a child, 45 years or so ago, my brother and I lived for Friday nights - Cheese Steak Night. My Dad would stop at Captain Harvey's on Dundalk Avenue after pulling his rig in for the weekend after a week on the road.

He would bring home subs for all of us - his would be loaded with extra hots. I truly believed in my 8 year old heart that this was the food of the very, very lucky and my brother and I just got very, very lucky. We would fight for the biggest “half” and then for the crumbs and bits of meat that would fall onto the wrapping.

Cheese steak night even continued when my parents moved us out of Dundalk and into suburban Anne Arundel County. We would always joke about how fast Dad could get those subs across the bridge and through traffic and I believed he truly enjoyed trying to beat his previous time. His goal was to deliver the “best traveling” subs, which later became one of my criteria for deciding the best of anything.

Aahhh, the simple luxuries of my childhood. So I was nostalgically excited (excitedly nostalgic?) when I accepted a job offer near Dundalk that afforded me an opportunity to pick up a sub and carry it across the bridge. So, one evening, after a particularly grueling day and hungering for something substantial, I decided to stop by Captain Harvey's on Merritt Blvd - after discovering they have moved from Logan Village via Google. Which is confusing me still, because there IS a Captain Harvey's still operating there as of yesterday, what's up with that??

Anyway, I remember how I salivated on the trip home - the smell intoxicating me so that I was backing into my driveway before I even knew it. I carried my bag into the house, lovingly cradling it like a tiny infant before laying it gently onto the table and unwrapping it slowly.

At least that was what I tried to do - the grease and the gummy cheese was fighting to hang onto it's paper cocoon and when it was finally viewed, I was staring at a giant, rather unappealing mess. I specifically stated raw onions - for my trouble I got no onions at all. The meat was way too much, very dry and strange-smelling. It appeared as if it was lying around for a while (which it was). What little cheese (provolone) on the sub was stuck onto the wrapper. There was a sliver of tomato and a few shreds of lettuce. The roll was a mess - cheap H & S that should have been tossed the day before. I did not finish it and threw the meat I picked off away. I laid on the couch and felt sickish. Needless to say, any craving for a cheese steak went away for a long while, at least 2 years.

So after dropping off my granddaughter the other day and heading back home from Annapolis, I found myself craving something good. Wasn't sure what, but I knew that I would know when I happened upon it. To avoid the weekend bridge traffic on Rt. 2, I decided to take a more scenic route and made a left off Ritchie Highway and onto B & A Blvd., meandering along while I decided what would satisfy my craving.

So I was kinda surprised when I happened upon a sub shop with a sign out front proclaiming “Anne Arundel County's BEST Cheese steak”. What? Who? Jenos Steaks. Why did I not know this place? I was even more surprised when my mouth started to salivate and I realized this might satiate the craving.

I was even more astounded that I actually hit the brakes and did a u-turn - I mean, what the heck was I thinking? Take a chance on a unheard of place that is bold enough to boast that it serves the Best of the Best? Always a kiss of death. A place with a cliche name of Jenos?

Ok, I was feeling a little lucky.....not very, very lucky, but I was willing to gamble.

I entered the tiny shop, it's walls obliterated by snapshots and clippings of who-knows-who and about who-knows-what. I was too intrigued by the smell of steak - emanating from a grill that was manned by the most serious of grill-steak-sub-makers. It was truly like watching a craftsman honing his craft, using his cooking instruments expertly, working the steak back and forth on an impossibly clean grill. He tossed and turned and inspected continuously, weeding any little bits of fat away from the meat and into the trap.

I saw three impeccably dressed sub rolls, loaded with fixin's. The grill-meister picked up the cheese placed on each sub and very carefully positioned it on the mound of steak, allowing it to melt just enough, before turning it onto the roll. With precision work, each sub was loaded, wrapped and lovingly marked with a Sharpie. Several times, I saw him pull the tiniest, teeniest piece of fat away as he loaded the roll with the meat - once as he was wrapping one up.

Apparently, their credo is “Let no fat come between a customer and their steak sub”.

I was thrilled - and ready to order. Jeno's has quite a few specialty subs, some inspired by customers, but I stuck with the basic cheese steak - which will set you back about $8.50. For that - you have your choice of cheese - american, provolone and the disgusting “whiz” and lettuce, tomato, onions, mayo, etc. as desired. Their fries are cooked in 100% peanut oil, but I passed on ordering any as the size of the sub was enough for a meal and then some.

I was fascinated as grill-meister executed his precision skills with palpable intensity - I have never seen such care exercised in the preparation of a sub before in my life. I was almost hypnotized as I watched. When the meat was finally prepared, loaded and wrapped, I had to break out of my reverie to finally receive the prize.

I thanked him for taking such care with my food as if he were preparing it for himself. I learned that he was the son of the family that has owned it for many years before finally stumbling out with the treasure cradled in my arms. I was so anxious to get home and see what I purchased that I forgot to ask him his name!

After arriving home, I noted two things immediately - the lack of grease and how neat the sub looked after being wrapped and riding in the car for 20 minutes. So far, so good - it passed the “travel test”. I was also impressed by the smell of the steak - really, really good. I could hardly contain myself after the first bite - it tasted even better than it smelled.

I realized now why I usually add a lot of onions and hots to a sub - to add flavor. I am not a bland or plain person - but this steak - I could have eaten it plain on a plate. It was that good.

I took my time eating it - and afterwards, I did not feel bloated or stuffed. Just very happy.

I went online and did a little research on them - their web site has their menu and hours, but little else at this time. Their tagline is “Get hooked on Jenos Steaks!”. I also stumbled on a few reviews from people from Philadelphia who raved that this was the “best cheese steak outside of Philly”. I honor everyone's opinion, however, I was in Philly a few years ago and I hated the sub that I got. I thought I was being cool and ordered it Philly style and all I got was a hot mess. It was gross. Plus, I am not a fried onions fan - I like them cold and crunchy on the hot steak.

In my opinion, I would have to say that this sub beats anything I have ever had anywhere. Her love of crafts and the art of crafting compelled her to start her first venture "L & M Crafts". For the last 30 years or so, she worked tirelessly at various flea markets, fairs, etc. She developed a keen eye for bargains and also became hyper-aware of the limitations of her customers - she wanted her pricing structure to be so that things desired can be affordable for those with ( and without!) budgets.
An opportunity arose about a year or so ago for LouAnn to have her own store in Rosedale. It was not long before, supported by the available space and opportunity and love of all things magickal, she added her pagan offerings to her store inventory. Things just naturally evolved into a homey and comfortable environment that encourages both browsing and lingering. LouAnn has her own line of bath salts and potpourri and she offers little bowls filled with samples for anybody to take home and try. Her fragrances fill the air!

Currently, there is Tarot reading by Bennu by appointment and a selection of his magickal oils and incenses for sale.

This is a very child friendly place - breakables seem positioned out of reach. There is a Kid's Kraft corner in the front section of the store - a wonderful area for kids to draw, create, etc. and display their work on a huge board for all to see - what a great idea!

In addition to the crafts and pagan items, she also has an extensive inventory of body piercing supplies, jewelry, etc.

LouAnn also sells Mountain T-shirts - $10 for Adult sizes and $5 for Child sizes. They are displayed on one entire wall of the store. She also has a display of hand-sewn pillows made with designs and fabrics from the Mountain line - I picked up one of “The Morrighan” for only $10!

She also will take any order for any customer out of the Azure Green catalog - at her discount and no shipping fees.. When I asked her why she does that she replied simply that it is her way of "giving back".

Now - that's a bargain!

Please visit when you can - the shop is closed on Sundays and Mondays. The store is very easy to find - not far from Pastore's of Rosedale - sitting on the corner across from the dentist's (Dr. Wendy Rose-Hyatt) office. There is also a huge sign out front with the address numbers - 8301 - can't miss it.
